Athleticism: VW towers over just about everybody. He’s 7’2” with a reported 7’7” wingspan, and uses that length disrupt every part of the opposing offense. He is incredibly thin right now, so we hope that the body will allow at least some weight in future. VW is only 15 years old but is already known for his elite size but has been underrated for his fluid athleticism & coordination.

Offense: While he only shot 1-of-6 from deep in this tournament, he has shown the ability to step out and hit jump shots. It will likely never be a focal point of his game but the skill set is there. With solid mechanics, really high release point, and soft touch he gives promise of becoming a real threat on the entire floor.

He projects best as a PnR lob target. With his extreme length and ability to move, he high points the ball well for alley oops. He flashes skills on the post and ability to dribble but he’s still a bit raw in those aspects. I believe that eventually he’ll be able to handle at an average/above avg. level but it could take some time. He’s an adequate passer with both hands thanks to good feel and anticipation, the ambidexterity is impressive at 15 and should only get better. Crashes the offensive glass with high motor often ending in putback dunks.

Defense: Shot-blocking is his elite skill right now; he averaged 5.3 per contest and made life difficult for everyone the entire time. His timing is exceptional when protecting the rim but also showed the tools to close passing lanes. The ability to defend the perimeter is still in question because he’s so gangly, but his length allows him to close out and contend shots at a high level. His rebounding is spectacular, not only due to his massive hands and reach but also his high activity. Gathered 16.2 rebounds per 40 setting him apart in this event, giving us a glimpse into the range he can command in the future.

Overall: He’s a huge kid and still young for his competition. His rim protection and rebounding are already elite for his age and should only get better with added muscle. With his size, athletic ability, and potential to develop a scoring skillset, he is certainly one to watch for the 2023 NBA Draft.
